Communications Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for managing SFER's social media platforms, media relations, and publicity efforts. He or she will also conduct policy research, draft outreach materials as needed, and assist the Director of Communications with regional communications support, special editorial projects, and strategic media campaign planning. This role requires flawless writing and editing skills and excellent interpersonal interface as the Communications Coordinator plays a critical role as the organization's primary PR agent. The Communications Coordinator should be able to thrive in a fast paced environment, work under tight deadlines, balance multiple projects, and pay meticulous attention to detail.

  • Job Responsibilities

    • The Communications Coordinator will manage and support projects across a variety of functional areas, likely including, but not limited to, the following:
    • Collaborate across departments on various communications projects to support the vision of a national nonprofit organization with 140 campus chapters and operations in 35+ states
    • Contribute to communications strategy: plan and maintain communications calendar, improve internal processes, 
and work with State Program Directors to build and execute robust state-level communications plans
    • Prepare marketing collateral: write and edit copy for marketing materials (one-pagers, brochures, etc.) and other external documents to promote and inform various audiences about SFER's mission and vision; manage development of marketing materials by working with third-party vendors as appropriate to manage materials and print orders
    • Support the Director of Communications and Co-Executive Directors in creation of written materials (proposals, memos, updates) necessary to engage donors, partners, and board members
    • Utilize social and new media tools to empower student members to share their stories; Partner with staff, chapter leaders, and members to lead creation of web and social media content
    • Build cooperative relationships across print, broadcast and online media outlets; pitch calling
    • Work with the Director of Communications to identify media opportunities and implement campaigns around key issues in our campaign states; Conduct policy research and monitor the media cycle
    • Partner with the Director of Communications to track and evaluate strategic communications outreach to determine success at reaching target audiences; Utilize metrics and data analytics to advise digital strategy across campaigns and to improve impact/optimize communications over time

    • Flawless written and verbal communication skills and excellent editing skills
    • Abillity to work autonomously as part of an entrepreneurial team; ability to prioritize among competing goals to

    • Articulate, polished, and professional demeanor with strong work ethic, initiative, and confidence
    • Alignment with the educational philosophy and core beliefs of SFER
    • Experience in journalism or copy editing a plus but not require
